TOMPKINS
PLACE
BROOKLYN
Inspired by The Met Cloisters, we transformed a dreary sunken backyard into a tranquil, meditative outdoor area. The existing deck was updated with lattice fencing and an elegant dark stain which helped establish the deck not just as a seating area but as an architectural feature in its own right. An unused area beneath the deck is now a hidden storage space; crucial for cramped city living. The bottom level is lined with pea gravel surrounding a ring of boxwoods and english perennials, within which a small stone water feature softly burbles. Terra cotta pots planted with climbing vines, boxwoods, and delicate flowers are placed in front of a newly constructed retaining wall/bench made of light Indiana limestone.
